Before the introduction of plastic pipes in plumbing, cast iron pipes were widely used as they are durable, fire resistant and are relatively unaffected by hot water. However, in late 90s plastic pipes started making entry into plumbing industry and in last ten years they are extensively used in plumbing. Lower cost and weight which makes handling much easier are the major reasons why plastic pipes are preferred over cast iron pipes. Also in case of plastic pipes there is no problem of rusting and subsequent clogging of the line as it used to happen in case of cast iron pipes

Unplasticised polyvinyl chloride (UPVC), CPVC, high density polyethylene (HDPE), and polypropylene (PPR) are the four main types of polymers used in making of pipes in India.  Among several variants of plastic pipes available in the market, the demand for UPVC and CPVC, in particular, is rising due to their affordability, high quality, and high durability.

In India, UPVC and CPVC pipes are mainly used in plumbing while HDPE pipes find application in agriculture. While UPVC usage as % of the total pipes industry is stagnant at 8% during last five years, that of CPVC has moved up from 8% to 12% during the same period.

However, some experts have expressed their concerns over extensive use of CPVC in potable water supply because of high lead content in Indian CPVC pipes. Also at times, the quality of the adhesives used in joints is suspect and often poor quality and hazardous materials used. In USA, several cities have not permitted the usage of plastic pipes in residential water and plumbing system. In commercial and high-rise buildings plastic pipes are not allowed in USA. So there need to be sufficient quality control and certification before allowing the extensive use of plastic pipes in Indian buildings because certain qualities which the conventional GI pipes have cannot be mimicked by plastic pipes.

Despite these reservations, CPVC pipes are gaining ground in Indian plumbing industry. Low crude oil price which prevailed during last few years till 2017 which in turn kept the polymer prices under check also helped plastic pipes gain prominence in Indian plumbing industry. The CPVC segment, which poses technological barriers to enter, has also given branded players and opportunity to increase their market share. Until then, UPVC dominated the plastic piping industry with several unorganised players posing stiff competition to branded players. It is estimated that by 2021-22, the share of CPVC pipes in overall plastic pipes industry would increase from 12% in 2016-17 to around 20%, possibly registering the highest growth of 24-25%.
