Unorganised labour force to get more benefits

The Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitaraman, in her budget speech has indicated that gig, building, and construction-workers are likely to get benefits like health, housing and insurance. The government will launch a portal that will collect relevant information on gig, building, and construction-workers among others which will help to frame suitable schemes for them in future.

“To further extend our efforts towards the unorganised labour force migrant workers particularly, I propose to launch a portal that will collect relevant information on gig, building, and construction-workers among others,” the FM said in her budget speech. According to the FM, this will help to formulate Health, Housing, Skill, Insurance, Credit, and food schemes for migrant workers.

The government will also provide social security benefits to gig and platform workers. “We will conclude a process that began 20 years ago, with the implementation of the 4 labour codes,” the FM declared. Also, minimum wages will apply to all categories of workers, and they will all be covered by the Employees State Insurance Corporation. Women will be allowed to work in all categories and also in the night-shifts with adequate protection. At the same time, compliance burden on employers will be reduced with single registration and licensing, and online returns.

Meanwhile, the One Nation One Ration Card scheme is under implementation by 32 states and UTs, reaching about 69 crores beneficiaries – that’s a total of 86% beneficiaries covered. The remaining 4 states and UTs will be integrated in the next few months.
