An innovative solution by an Indian company ‘AlphaMERS’ has helped prevent hundreds of tons of plastic and trash from being carried by a river to the sea. The solution is a heavy duty floating barrier made of steel and aluminium, with a high tensile strength and an ability to survive very polluted waters. This barrier stops the trash and brings it to the riverbank, making use of the natural flow of river water. Since it enables land-based excavators and conveyors, instead of boats, to evacuate the collected trash, it makes it a very low opex solution. This solution does not deal with dissolved pollutants and the disposal of removed trash is through regular municipal channels.
Currently deployed at multiple locations for a coastal city corporation, the barrier has helped turn around the appearance of a very polluted river for the better. This deployment is also expected to reduce the litter in nearby beaches, earlier carried by the river and then the sea currents
