‘Minimalism is all about achieving harmony in design through simplicity. There is no clutter, no ornate furniture, no heavy upholstery, no ornate designs. While this sort of an aesthetic may have an appeal for many, minimalism is all about achieving more through less’, says Sandesh Dhanraj, CEO & Founder, Noah Interiors

What is minimalism in interior design? Minimalism in interior design means a focus on emphasizing space by using as few elements as possible to fill that space. Minimalism as a design form can be seen in various design styles across the world, whether Chinese, Japanese, Scandinavian etc. The key elements of this style of design are simplicity in shape, colour and texture.
Some of the most popular trends in this style include soft accents, low furniture, pastel shades, sharp and clean lines, solid surfaces minimalism etc. What may be cold and bare to someone may actually be sleek and simple from the minimalist perspective. In other words, minimalism is all about achieving harmony in design through simplicity. There is no clutter, no ornate furniture, no heavy upholstery, no ornate designs. While this sort of an aesthetic may have an appeal for many, minimalism is all about achieving more through less.
Here are a few ways in which minimalism can be applied in furniture designs.
Choose a single standout piece of furniture
Find a stand out piece of furniture and build your story around it. Rather than having a whole lot of furniture pieces choose one standout piece: like a sofa, a center table etc. and build your room around it with minimal accessories like artworks, pictures, lamps, plants.
An open floor plan with black and white minimalist design works well for the kitchens. The kitchen is the focal point of the homes, so you can add a contemporary feel to it with minimalist kitchen furniture like lacquered cabinetry, leather stools, wooden countertops and backsplashes. A minimalist kitchen design need not be devoid of colours; add bits of colour to the natural woods to get the shine.
Minimalist aesthetics have a pleasing effect on the eyes and is a great way of designing a bathroom style. Soften the simple lines of minimalist bathroom designs with the use of indoor potted plants. Use a wooden cubby to store all the toiletries. Incorporate a wooden towel rack, a low floating shelf to hold all soap and lotion dispensers. Use different shades of the same hue. Add wooden cabinets other natural elements to your minimalist bathroom to give it a spa-like feel.
Add a touch of pizazz to your living room with the incorporation of sculptural chairs, furniture upholstery and feature walls. Replace the rectangular coffee table with round ones to make the room airy. Add personality to the living space with cube stools. Use accent chairs with matching footstools in the sitting area to get the comfortable look. Instead of the normal storage tables use an elliptical desk.
A dining room is an essential gathering place in the house; so it needs to be aesthetically pleasing. A black dining table can be paired with modern dining chairs. Tall kitchen cabinetry integrated with even taller chairs make the room feel bigger and open. A minimalist dining room need not be devoid of decorations; a creative accent wall with innovative decoration gives the room a sleek and clean appearance.
Let the lights of dusk and dawn light up your bedroom rather than cluttering it up. A platform bed along with a minimalist bed frame can be a great option as a centerpiece. For bachelors, a metal bed frame or box spring is the most apt budget-friendly minimalist design idea. A nightstand provides a storage place for the alarm clock, mobiles and also a lamp. To make the room more spacious replace the traditional 6 drawer chest with a tall 6 drawer set. Sharpen the contrast of the furnishings by hanging a bold large canvas above the bed. Placing a potted plant on the window shelf or a makeshift shelf brings the room to life. Add minimalistic aesthetic to the room with the incorporation of the right lighting that complements the furnishings.
Add a touch of beauty to your garden by combining minimalism with rustic elements like wooden table with a metal frame. Make use of aesthetically pleasing furniture like low tables, sun loungers, carver chairs, coffee tables and footstools. Elevated garden decks paired with lounge chairs look stunning and are also in tune with minimalism. Replace the old and damaged garden chairs with new chairs in contemporary colours to give the garden a clean appearance.
Minimalist designs add more space to the rooms and also make the living space aesthetically pleasing. Minimalistic interiors reflect a simple yet practical approach towards design and also express an individual’s personality.
