‘While infrastructure development and construction is important to the growth of a nation, it is also important to understand the repercussions of our actions and their long-term effects on the environment. There should be a collective effort on the part of professionals as well as politicians to make sure that growth is enabled in tandem with sustainability’, says Rupali Naik & Satish Naik; A design studio
Tell us on the Ecological balance of the nation.
Not taking appropriate and stringent action on people or groups that contribute to deforestation or felling of forests is something that should be checked. It is true that there really is no point in planting a couple of trees so that an entire stretch of forest can be cleared without damage to the social conscience. While infrastructure development and construction is important to the growth of a nation, it is also important to understand the repercussions of our actions and their long-term effects on the environment. There should be a collective effort on the part of professionals as well as politicians to make sure that growth is enabled in tandem with sustainability.
Preservation or Progess? Planting trees – or planting hopes??
As the population levels grow and the need and demands of the common people increase there really is no way in which you can completely halt things like cutting down of forests. However, with government policies in place and practice, it is possible to limit the harmful practices and stop them in places where they pose a greater damage. While it is highly essential for the people on grass root levels to bring about lifestyle changes, a major difference can be made with the action from policy makers and law enforcement agencies.
What do you think are the hazards to the environment a project may cause? Are we sensitive towards our environment?
In a lot of situations, it is seen that the greed of the builders and all the parties standing to gain from a project choose to overlook the hazards to the environment that a project may cause. It can be said that to some extent people do not seem to take sustainability as seriously as it should be taken. However, this does not go to mean that everyone is the same and that no one cares about the environment. There are certain planners that make it a point to work around the benefit of nature and build all their infrastructure or business processes around sustainability. It is important to learn about the protectors of nature and take inspiration from them to be able to deal with those that care only about gaining personal benefits.
The growth of society and its people is inevitable because of the way in which lifestyles are constantly changing to be more lavish and laidback.
We are moving towards a world that is constantly driven by technology and electric. While it is impossible and unwise to put a stop on the growth in lifestyle changes, it is essential to be sensitive towards the needs of the environment. The silver lining that is seen is in the fact that people are more aware about the repercussions of their actions. More people now realise the importance of a healthy environment and this is seen in the new age practices such as rain water harvesting, which are actively included in construction plans of buildings. While the world is using up natural resources at a great pace, all is not lost and there are still people that are talking about leading a healthy lifestyle to aid the environment.
What about Safety in buildings? What’s so bad about buildings either crumbling away or caught in fire?
Wear and tear issues of buildings are very different from fire and both need to be seen with separate plans of action in view. While the redevelopment of old buildings is more in vogue and practice in the modern times, it is important to be more attentive to the structures that actually need development on an urgent basis. Being proactive on the part of users as well as government agencies is important to make sure that avoidable tragedies are kept at bay.
On the other hand, prevention of fire accidents is something that needs to be done in new as well as old structures. It is essential that builders stick to the rules of fire prevention in structures to make sure that they are safe for use. The fact that a lot of fire accidents are happening may be because there is a lapse in following rules as well as keeping checks on builders. With strict laws in place and examples of implementation of laws it can be made sure that more people take fire safety seriously.
