Renowned architect Balkrishna Doshi is one of the three Indians who have made it to the Fortune magazine’s ‘Fifty greatest leaders of 2018’ rankings released Thursday. Human rights lawyer, Indira Jaising and Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries are the other two persons from India who figure in this year’s ‘Fifty greatest leaders’ list. The students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Bill and Melinda Gates and #MeToo Movement were the top-ranked names in the Fortune magazine’s ’50 Greatest Leaders’ list.
Incidentally, this year’s Pritzker Prize, architecture’s highest honour, was awarded to Doshi, who has spent nearly seven decades of professional career to reach the fruits his profession to the poor by championing accessible and affordable housing. 90 year old Doshi is the first and the only Indian architect to win the Pritzker Prize in its four-decade history.
Doshi, 1976 Padma Shri awardee, is known for his contribution to low cost housing, city planning and education. He had one of the rare distinctions of working for Chandigarh city project which is considered to be one of the first planned cities of modern India. Though he has taught architecture students abroad, all his architectural works have taken place within India and has done no overseas projects.
His noteworthy designs include the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore and the Aranya Low Cost Housing development in Indore which was awarded the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.
Doshi has been instrumental in establishing the nationally and internationally known research institute Vastu-Shilpa Foundation for Studies and Research in Environmental Design. The institute has done pioneering work in low cost housing and city planning. His work is considered noteworthy for his pioneering work on low-income housing. He is also noted for designs which incorporate concepts of sustainability in innovative ways. Doshi is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and has been on the selection committee for the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts, and the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. He is also a Fellow of the Indian Institute of Architects.
Although ‘Fortune’ has been known for business journalism, its annual list of greatest leaders covers a wide spectrum of areas going beyond business and includes government officials, chiefs of NGOs, clergy, coaches, athletes, artists, educators anyone who has used their influence and status to make a difference in the wider world. One of its premises is that anyone who wants to lead in business can learn lessons from anyone leading anywhere.
