Odisha’s capital city Bhubaneswar is the only Indian city which has found its place in the list of world’s Top 20 Smart City List-2017. Singapore tops the list in the Intel-sponsored study conducted by Juniper Research. The study was conducted from July to September last year.
“Congratulations #Bhubaneswar on being the only Indian city to be ranked among 20 best performing Smart Cities in the world. Bhubaneswar has evolved as a truly Global City & it is our constant endeavour to develop it as the Best,” said the Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik in his Twitter message.
In the ranking of 20 global smart cities, Singapore topped the charts across all four areas – mobility, healthcare, public safety and productivity. Bhubaneswar is ranked 13th in public safety indicator and 20th in mobility, healthcare and productivity indexes. Bhubaneswar has been placed at the 13th spot in terms of safety as measured by crime levels, mortality and law enforcement services’ efforts to combat these challenges.
Smart cities are cities which employ Internet of Things (IoT) technologies such as connected sensors, meters and lights to collect and analyse data to improve public infrastructure and services.
Bhubaneswar had earlier won National Planning Excellence and Achievement Awards-2017 awarded by the American Planning Association (APA). This apart, the city had bagged the second runners-up spot at the World Smart City Awards-2016 in Barcelona.
Known as the Temple City, Bhubaneswar is the only Tier-2 city in the country to host the top five Indian IT companies: Infosys, Wipro, Tata Consultancy Services, Tech Mahindra and Mindtree. Bhubaneswar was one of the first 20 cities chosen for Smart City development in 2016 under Smart City Mission of the government.
