Bihar state government wants world heritage status for Cyclopean Wall at Rajgir which is considered to be among the oldest specimen of masonry across the world. The state government has asked Union Cultural Ministry to direct Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to prepare a dossier for getting the world heritage status. The Principal Secretary of state art, culture and youth affairs department has already sent a letter to the Union Culture Ministry to this effect. A dossier is a voluminous document giving details of an archaeological site, its salient features and universal value, among other aspects, which is submitted by the government of the applicant country with World Heritage Committee of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). UNESCO has a mission to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity.

There are already two UNESCO declared world heritage sites in Bihar – Nalanda ruins and Mahabodhi Mahavihara in Bodh Gaya. ASI had prepared similar dossier for these two sites also before getting world heritage tag.

The 22-km long Cyclopean walls are 4 meters wide and encircle the city of Rajgir. It is believed to have been built in the pre-Mauryan era, before 3rd century BC, using massive undressed stones. Today, most of it stands in ruins.
