CEL to expand solar cells manufacturing capacity

Central Electronics Limited (CEL) is a Public Sector Unit (PSU) under the Ministry of Science & Technology, is planning to expand its solar cells and solar modules manufacturing capacity. The company will expand its Crystalline Silicon (C-Si) solar cells and/or solar modules production each in the coming years for making the products financially viable and to increase domestic content requirement.

CEL presently has a production capacity of 10 MW for crystalline silicon solar cells and 25 MW for crystalline silicon solar modules. The existing production facilities of the company are situated on a 50 acre plot in Sahibabad, U.P. According to the new plan, the company may go for upgradation of existing facilities or setting up altogether new facilities.

The company is planning to appoint a consultant who can analyse, propose and suggest the possible models for collaboration with a partner company and advice the best suited model to CEL for setting up manufacturing facilities for crystalline silicon (C-Si) solar modules and/or solar cells.

It may be recalled here that in June 2018, the company had  floated an expression of interest for strategic alliance/ tie up for setting up manufacturing facility for crystalline silicon solar modules and/or solar cells. Few companies had sent their proposals in the EoI but CEL didn’t take the matter forward. In July last year, the government implemented the safeguard duty on solar cells and modules. After the implementation of safeguard duty few companies have shown interest to set up manufacturing facilities in India. Hence CEL floated a perpetually open EoI again for setting up manufacturing facilities in November, 2018 for which companies have shown interest. Now, to take the matter forward, CEL is appointing a consultant.
