Ceramics exports from Morbi in Gujarat is expected to touch Rs 10,000 crore this year. Ceramic tiles from Morbi are seeing increased demand from overseas markets and this year local manufacturers are confident of achieving 40% growth in the exports. Ceramic tile makers also received several export orders during 4-day Vibrant Ceramic Expo held at Gandhinagar in November last year. Exports from Morbi have already crossed Rs 8,500 crore and if the same trend continues during rest of the financial year the target can be easily achieved. It may be remembered here that ceramic tiles exports from Morbi last year was Rs 6,200 crore.
Morbi ceramic manufacturers export their products to 150 countries which include traditional into ceramic producing countries such as Spain, Italy, Mexico, Brazil and Turkey. Interestingly, some players have also bagged export order from China in recent months. On the domestic front manufacturers expect 15-20% growth which in the light of introduction of RERA and GST is considered to be good.
Morbi, located in Gujarat, is probably the second-largest tile cluster in the world after Foshan in China. It houses 550-600 units, which produce all types of tiles, from the basic ceramic floor and wall tiles to the most sophisticated PVT/GVT tiles. While most manufacturers are unorganized small- and medium-scale units, a few have formed joint ventures with larger branded players while few have been successful in creating their own brand.
