East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) on Friday received SKOCH order-of-merit Award under solid waste management category for its construction and demolition waste processing plant. EDMC’s construction and demolition waste plant at Shastri Park processes 500 tonnes of construction waste per day and convert it into useful products such as bricks, stone, sand, pavement and foothpath tiles, drain covers, kern stone etc. based on advance wet processing technology.
The project is being run by EDMC on 2.5 acre land through its private partner IL&FS Environmental Infrastructure & Services Ltd (IEISL). The processed material in the plant ranges from cement concrete, bricks, cement plaster, steel, rubble, stone, timber/wood, clay etc.
This unique initiative of EDMC has been recognised as it is helping in efficient management of construction waste and saving the environment on the basis of public voting. Poor management of construction waste is one of the major causes of air pollution in Delhi. Construction and demolition waste processing plants like these can help in curbing air pollution to a large extent.
This plant is in line with Plans such as Swachh Bharat Mission and Smart City. Solid waste management is one of the biggest challenges the country is facing and project such as will help cities get rid of illegal dumping of construction materials in public places.
The products made from recycled material were tested in various laboratories and found to be suitable for specified purposes. Today these products are actually being sold in the market.
