The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to go green! The Municipal Corporation will implement Green Building Code in all its offices, including the headquarters, zonal and deputy commissioner’s offices. By going green GHMC will not only improve its carbon footprint but also will bring down power consumption by 30%, and water consumption by 20%.

In order to achieve its objective, GHMC will soon install LED bulbs, replace power guzzling fans and air conditioners with five-star rated equipment, install rainwater harvesting systems, establish water treatment plants and water meters. In addition to these measures, efforts are on to install solar power plants of 80 KW capacity in its central, zonal and deputy commissioner’s offices.

It may be noted that as of now, the 88,000-square feet premises of the GHMC headquarters near Liberty Junction is utilising 119 units of power per square foot, per year. The air-conditioners alone are consuming 51.78 million units of power per year, while generators are producing 1.26 million units in a year, at the time of power outages. Two lakh litres of water is consumed per month for daily use. By going green, considerable savings can be achieved both in power and water consumption. By undertaking these measures, GHMC is also likely to get Silver rating as per IGBC code.
