Tamil Nadu will be formulating GIS (geographic information system)-based master plan for 10 cities in the state under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (Amrut) program. The Directorate of Town and Country Planning is seeking consultants to prepare consultancy services for the same under three packages. These 10 cities for which GIS-based master plan will be formulated are Dindigul, Karaikudi, Rajapalayam, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Ambur, Salem, Thanjavur, Pudukottai and Kumbakonnam.
It should be noted that the Central government has identified 33 towns in Tamil Nadu for implementation of Amrut scheme. An important reform under Amrut is preparation of master plan using GIS technique. Out of these 33 towns, eight are within the jurisdiction of Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) and 25 are in DTCP areas. GIS-based Master Plans will help in different types of urban planning exercises which include preparation of development, utility and infrastructure plans.
Existing geo-spatial databases of towns and cities available with State governments will be updated and integrated with State-wide GIS platform which will provide single-window services to citizens to increase efficiency and productivity.
