The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) that develops green rating programmes and offers certification, plans to certify as many as 1,000 products by 2022. At the moment, a total of 375 products from over 25 manufacturers have adopted GreenPro and these include building construction like cement.
At present, IGBC’s concentration is mainly on building materials for the purpose of certification. However, going forward efforts will be made to include industrial products and technologies and consumer products as well for making them green.
The second edition of the GreenPro Summit conducted by IGBC, a body under the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), was held at the HICC in Hyderabad recently. Subjects such as the use of green products for building exteriors, innovative green products, and green readymix concrete are being discussed at the two-day event. At the inaugural session of the Summit, GreenPro certification was awarded to 13 companies, viz. ACC Limited, Akzo Nobel India Ltd, Eden Innovations India Pvt Ltd, Ekam Eco Solutions Pvt Ltd, Green Build Products India Pvt Ltd, Godrej & Boyce Mfg Co Ltd, Godrej Construction, Honeywell Home and Building Technologies, Kesoram Industries Ltd, Magneto CleanTech, NITCO Ltd, Star Comfort Industries, and UltraTech Cement Ltd (Unit: Birla White).
IGBC also plans to study the feasibility of adopting of green products for the construction of buildings in Hyderabad as per the government’s directive. Hyderabad will be the first megacity where such a feasibility study will be conducted. It has previously been done in Bhopal and Indore. IGBC plans to complete the study before the Green Building Congress that is to be held in Hyderabad from November 1 to 3, in which 150 countries are expected to participate.
