IKEA which is going to open its first store in India at Hyderabad is expected to herald a new era in Indian furniture shopping experience. The company, which has 460 stores all over the world, will have 7,000 products on display – toys to kitchenware, furniture to bedroom linen – all you will find in IKEA store. And that too, more importantly, at better than before IKEA prices keeping in mind the fact that Indian consumers are price conscious. Incidentally, India is expected to be IKEA’s least expensive market worldwide – the company has done its homework very well before entering our homes!
Spread over five acres of land, the size of IKEA store will be that of an average Indian mall. It will have a built-in warehouse, a furniture assembly hall and more importantly a restaurant with a capacity to accommodate 1,000 people. So, you may visit an IKEA store not just for shopping but for full outing. IKEA will source 20% of its products from the local suppliers to ensure that the local economy also benefits from its entry into the country. And at the same time giving a big push for Prime Minister’s ‘Make in India’ agenda. The ratio of local sourcing is expected to go up substantially in the coming years.
One of the unique features of IKEA’s India operations is that it will provide furniture assembly assistance and also home delivery facility for the consumers which is not the case with its stores in other parts of the world.
Earlier, IKEA was planning to open its first store in India on July 19th at Hyderabad. IKEA Retail India has now decided to move this date to August 9th as it needed some more time to live up to its expected quality commitments towards customers and coworkers, the company said in a statement. IKEA’s first store in Hyderabad will be followed by another store in Navi Mumbai. And the third store will be opened in in Bengaluru which will take place only by mid-2019. IKEA plans to open 42 such store (almost 10% of its total stores world over) in next few years.
