When prices of building materials are going through the roof, Tamil Nadu government’s “Amma Cement” scheme is providing partial relief for the independent home builders (IHBs). The scheme introduced in 2015 aims at offering cement at reduced price to the deserving people and insulate them from problem of rising cement prices. The government procures cement from the manufacturers in bulk and supplies them to the poor needy people at a reduced rate.
Common man can get cement at Rs 190 per bag (of 50 kgs) under Amma Cement scheme while the ruling retail price of cement in the market is around Rs 350 per bag. In the first nine months of current financial year, the state government has already sold 17706.55 tonnes of cement under the scheme. However, many complain that only the lucky gets the cement at subsidised rates.
People also say that cement is one of the materials required in house building and there are other materials too prices of which are going up 10-15% every year. They are complaining that among other materials, steel prices are moving up much steeper now than in the past. They hope that the government soon comes out with “Amma Steel” scheme!
