Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), an organization with a mandate to implement strategic projects in Mumbai, has turned eco-friendly. The Regional Planning Authority is considering a proposal to recycle the construction and demolition waste generated during Metro work into construction material. MMRDA has chalked out a massive Metro Master Plan to provide a rail based mass transit facility to people residing in the areas that are not connected by existing suburban rail system. Metro corridor development plan is expected to generate an overall 1,61,080 cubic metres (cu m) of C&D waste.

According to MMRDA, Metro projects are likely to generate C&D (Construction & Demolition) waste beyond the quantity specified in the notification which makes it mandatory for the Authority to initiate the processing of C&D waste generated from its Mumbai Metro projects. MMRDA is planning to recycle the waste generated in Metro construction for use as raw material in construction of buildings. According to the Rules for Management of C&D Waste, 2016, if a project generates waste more than 20 tonnes or more in one day or 300 tonnes per project in a month, it will be the responsibility of the project owner to manage the waste so generated.

However, there is no immediate plan to recycle the waste and it will be done only when work on the most of the Metro projects start. At present, there is not much waste generated to make recycling viable.
