In another step to achieve maximum ease in doing business in Maharashtra, the state government has appointed another government agency, Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA)as special planning authority. Henceforth MHADA will act as SPA for all Mhada layouts. For such projects Mhada will not only issue no-objection certificates for redevelopment, but also approve building plans. Currently, this is being done by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
MHADA will be the third such SPA in Mumbai that will approve redevelopment plans. The others being the Slum Rehabilitation Authority and the Dharavi Redevelopment Authority (DRA).
MHADA is an apex public body constituted under MHAD ACT 1976, established in 1977 under Housing Department Government of Maharashtra and integrated the activities and functions performed by statutory bodies to provide comprehensive, co-ordinate approach to the problems of housing.
The state government decided to appoint Mhada as a special planning authority keeping in mind the delay in implementing the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (PMAY). By redeveloping Mhada layouts alone the government aims to create at least one lakh affordable tenements in the city. Another one lakh affordable tenements will be generated through slum redevelopment.
