Mumbai will soon have a new Bungalow for its Mayor and the architecture of the proposed building will be unique one. It has not yet been decided whether to go for an art deco building or a Victorian and Gothic structure. It has also been decided that the new building will be a green and sustainable building. Shalaka Lalwani of CoBOL Architects and Planners has been chosen to execute the project.
Mumbai is known for both art deco and Victorian and Gothic structure. The Municipal Commissioner reportedly has instructed architects and planners to rework the earlier plans and has asked them to submit a detailed plan by this month end. The new building is expected to take at least two years for completion.
It may be recalled here that the government has decided to convert the sea-side bungalow at Shivaji Park, Dadar, into memorial and museum for late Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray. The new bungalow will come up on a plot of land right next to the existing Mayor’s bungalow in Shivaji Park. The 4,345-sq-m plot that has been picked for the new bungalow that currently houses a 40-year old municipal gymkhana which will be pulled down.
The construction of the memorial will cost Rs 100 crore and the state government has already sanctioned the amount. Memorial will mostly be underground to ensure that no tree will be cut nor any changes would be made to the existing structure. It should be noted that existing 90-year old Mayor’s bungalow is a Grade II B heritage structure.
