Congratulations to Balkrishna Doshi for becoming the first Indian to be awarded the Pritzker Prize, the premier global award for architecture

Internationally acclaimed architect, Balakrishna Vithaldas Doshi, has been named this year’s winner of Pritzker Prize for being able to interpret architecture and transform it into buildings that respect Eastern culture. Regarded as the profession’s equivalent to the Nobel Prize, the award was given to Doshi in recognition of a career spanning almost 70 years. Doshi has become the first Indian architect to win the Pritzker Prize in its four-decade history.

But unlike other winners of this coveted award in the past, Doshi differs from them by having done no overseas projects. Though he has taught architecture students abroad, all his architectural works have taken place within India. This shows latest Pritzker Prize awardee’s committment to India.

“Congratulations to Balkrishna Doshi for becoming the first Indian to be awarded the Pritzker Prize, the premier global award for architecture. Dr Doshi’s contributions to our cityscape, our sense of aesthetics and to low-cost housing efforts make us proud” said the President, Ram Nath Kovind. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeted a laudatory message for the Pritzker Prize awardee.

Veteran architect Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi, 1976 Padma Shri awardee, is known for his contribution to low cost housing, city planning and education. He had one of the rare distinctions of working for Chandigarh city project which is considered to be one of the first planned cities of modern India.

During last seven decades Doshi has earned innumerable accolades and is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and has been on the selection committee for the Pritzker Prize, the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts, and the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.
