Satellite mapping in Telengana has paid rich dividends unearthing many new properties, illegal constructions, deviations from sanctioned plan and above all helping the local bodies to collect more revenue by way of property tax.
Telangana government had obtained satellite imagery from ISRO-National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) through its Bhuvan online geo-portal platform for map visualisation and these were integrated with available house numbers, property tax and registration details in ULBs. Mapping and geo-tagging of 12.5 lakh properties across 72 municipalities was completed recently.
After this exercise, Municipal Administration & Urban Development Department has unearthed 21,000 new properties across the 72 municipalities in the state. The satellite database has also helped the municipal authorities to check for illegal constructions or buildings constructed by deviating from the sanctioned plan which in turn has helped the local bodies to check under-assessment or non-assessment of properties.
This operation has helped the local bodies to achieve robust growth in property tax collection. Property tax collection has seen 12% growth during 2017-18 over the previous year.
Interestingly, satellite mapping has unearthed one lakh Government properties which are tax defaulters in various municipalities.
