West Bengal government is planning to set up an exclusive park for the manufacture of building materials. For this, the state government will provide 100 acres in Burdwan district. The land belongs to West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation. The government will provide an additional 100 acres depending upon the demand. The main objective of the state government is to promote investments in the supply-chain of materials required to build houses. The state already has a new logistics policy in place in the state.
It should be noted that West Bengal is not the first state to venture into building materials park as southern states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana had also declared their intentions to have similar parks earlier. For example, erstwhile Chief Minister of Andhra, N. Chandrababu Naidu, after his visit to China in 2016, had signed an MoU with China Association of Small and Medium Enterprises and China Small and Medium Investment Group Limited to set up Building Materials Industrial Park and Modern Building Materials Logistics Park at Donakonda in Prakasam district.
Similarly, Telangana government in February 2018 had announced its plans to set up a Construction and Building Material Manufacturing Park near Hyderabad. The park was to come up on about 250 acres of land and UAE-based KEF Infra was appointed as its anchor company. The KEF had plans to house a plant in about 50 acres in the park at an estimated cost of Rs 650 crore. However, latest developments on both these proposals are not known.
