Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is making all out efforts to turn this UNESCO declared India’s first heritage city into a true green city. In this direction, the AMC is planning to grow 15 small urban forests inside Ahmedabad city. The civic body will develop urban forests on 15 plots across different zones. However, due to non-availability of open space in the central zone no forest will be developed there. It is to be noted that in 2004, AMC had done massive plantation and come up with seven urban forests.
Besides distributing free saplings, AMC is planning to plant 1.50 lakh saplings across the city this year. Ever year the AMC plants around one lakh saplings but most of them go waste as the survival rate is hardly 50%. Low survival rate is due to planting of pre-mature saplings. However, this year the civic body has decided to plant mature saplings that are 3-4 feet high. Trees like Neem, Kashid, Spatparni, Gul Mahor, Peltrophorum, Pipal, Piplo, Garmalo and Borsalli will be planted. Also, fruit-bearing trees like Jamun and Gooseberry will be planted.
