The Claridges, New Delhi is one of the best-known hotels located in the heart of Lutyen’s Delhi. About 3 years ago, the hotel decided that it would go in for renovation of rooms to keep up with the times, starting with the renovation and upgradation of 24 rooms.
As automation designers and vendors, Anusha Technovision Pvt. Ltd. (ATPL) was asked by the owners’ representative Pankaj Mishra to help design a room prototype with technology that was going to provide
- Added convenience to the hotel guest
- Install a system that was easy to use, considering the fact that this was a hotel guest who was going to use the room for a few nights only
- Additionally, to help save energy and costs
- Most importantly, to design a and provide an automation system that adds to the reputation of the Claridges as a high-end, business hotel catering to a faithful client list.
The ATPL team conceived a comprehensive automation system that would fulfill the above-mentioned needs of the client. For added convenience and exclusivity, an important factor that determined the design was that all the lights in the rooms would be under lighting controls and the required effect could only be available with the dimming of the lights. A preset lighting control system from Lutron was therefore adopted. In order to add to convenience, custom-engraved and backlit keypads were placed near the bed side and also near the entrance. Motorized Lutron shades were also incorporated and controlled from the same keypad. An innovation adopted was the absence of the Key Card. The room automation system was designed to detect guest presence and absence for the system to act accordingly. In order to save energy, the room system was linked to the room thermostat and lighting and guest presence detection was used to turn on the correct state in presence or absence of the guest in the room. The Do Not Disturb function and the Housekeeping mode was also designed to be activated from the same keypad. (When DND is activated for example, the doorbell is disabled and the DND sign on the outside keypad is highlighted). A single keypad by the side of the bed for lighting, shades and the DND functionality further reduces wall clutter.

Sequence of operations
Guest enters the room
Room automatically comes on to “welcome” state. The welcome state turns the thermostat to 22deg. C and the lighting to a “welcome Scene” which is neither too bright nor too dim. The curtains are by default closed. In the room, the guest uses the thermostat to change the temperature (if required) and also changes the lighting scene as and what appeals to the guest . Since each button is engraved, it is easy to understand and the change from one lighting scene to another is gradual and subtle.
Guest leaves the room
The guest presence detection system, when detecting absence of guest in the room, makes the automation system go to “Unoccupied state”. This prompts the room temperature to increase to a “setback” temperature of 26 degrees. The lights switch off and the curtains close. This “setback” temperature in the room and the switching off of lights, saves energy and the state is maintained until the guest returns.
Feedback from hotel
Approximately a year after the system has been installed and the rooms upgraded, the GM of the Hotel Mr. Atul Lall had this to say.” We are extremely happy with the guest feedback and the automation system for the rooms has been trouble-free for us”. Alok Hada, MD of Anusha Technovision says that “Doing the automation in rooms in a hotel was a novel experience for us, as until now – in all the hotels that we provided Lighting controls for, we were in the public areas, mostly. The complex conditional logic that is required to make sure that guest entry and exit “scenes” work flawlessly, was given careful consideration and designed accordingly. A year after the commissioning, if there are zero guest complaints and a positive feedback, it is a matter of pride for our integration capability and execution.”
